| FAREWELL to a legend DAVID BOYD OAM (1924-2011) 2011 has been a sad year in the art world with us now saying goodbye to yet another special artist - the wonderful David Boyd. Known for his gentle spirit and beautiful paintings, David Boyd passed away aged 87 on 10 November in Sydney surrounded by three generations of his family. David Boyd grew up in an exceptionally creative environment surrounded by artist parents and siblings in Melbourne. The Boyd family are one of Australia's most important and loved artistic dynasties. Whilst best known as a painter, David Boyd was also a gifted musician who spent time studying at the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music. He also studied at the National Gallery Art School before serving in the army during World War II. David Boyd was also a creator of beautiful pottery, both in Australia and London - a pursuit he shared with his talented wife Hermia. David Boyd travelled widely and lived and worked in London, Rome and France. He held over 40 major exhibitions in Australia and overseas and his distinctive paintings are represented in numerous private collections in Australia and overseas as well as public collections such as the National Galleries in Canberra & Melbourne, Australian War Memorial, Art Gallery of South Australia. the Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Western Australia, numerous other Australian regional, university and corporate collections & the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. In 2008, Boyd was awarded an OAM for his services to art, including developing new glazing techniques for ceramics. It has been a priviledge & pleasure to be associated with David Boyd's art.
